I’ve seen two movies where a central character cries as she eats her onigiri or Japanese rice balls. The first is Kamome Shokudo, where a Japanese lady sets up a small diner in Finland. The second is Spirited Away, a beloved Hayao Miyazaki animation about a young girl who somehow finds herself transported into the spirit world and can’t find her way back. I guess rice balls are just the kind of thing that reminds Japanese of home.
I wonder what my comfort food is. I’m a stress eater, but I don’t recall ever eating anything that brought me to the edge of tears. I wonder what dishes will tickle my tastebuds and tug at my heartstrings so as to bring me to the point of catharsis. Sometimes I think that I need that in my life. Food feels so horrible when you have too much (and I’ve had too much too often), and I think I’m doing it wrong by filling up instead of releasing.
Or something.
What’s your ultimate comfort food?
